5 Tricks to Sexy, Shiny Bouncy Hair
1. Trim ends, add bounce
If your haircut suddenly looks blah, ask your hairstylist for a graduated cut — that's pro-speak for soft, angled layers along the bottom of the hair (check out Jessica Alba's style). "They can be worked into just about any style that's chin-length or longer to give it more shape and swing," Tosler says.
2. Do a deep treatment
Combat dryness and flyaways by using a deep conditioner or hair mask once a week (or every other week if you have fine hair). They're like regular conditioners on steroids, loaded with moisturizers and strengthening nutrients. Look for one with panthenol, which helps repair damage and boosts shine, or glycerin, a mega-nourisher that's ideal for curly or coarse hair. If you're fine-haired, pick a mask without silicone or coconut oil, both of which can flatten your style (we like Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment, $42). Spread the formula through wet hair, avoiding your roots. "Then, to get the full benefits, leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing," says hairstylist Jordan Blackmore, who makes sure Lake Bell and Elizabeth Olsen have exceptionally nice hair.
3. Pump it up
For women with fine hair, the low humidity in winter is a body buzz-kill. "But many volumizers contain a lot of alcohol, so applying them all over can dehydrate hair," says hairstylist Alan Tosler, co-owner of Tosler Davis Hair Salon in New York City. His scaled-back solution: Squirt a root-lifting spray, such as John Frieda Luxurious Volume Blow-Dry Lotion Root Booster, $6.50, into damp roots, air-dry your hair for 10 to 20 minutes, then aim your blow-dryer nozzle at your roots while lifting them up with your fingers. "This sets the height," Tosler says. Style the rest of your hair, then mist just your roots with an aerosol hairspray.
4. Add major shine
"Glossy hair reads as healthy hair," says Hazan. If yours is dullish, apply a clear at-home glaze — which is packed with oils and proteins — monthly. (Try Fekkai Salon Glaze, $28.) Saturate wet, just-shampooed hair with it, leave for five minutes, then rinse and condition as usual. Or try Clairol Natural Instincts Shine Happy, $8.99; the treatment takes 15 minutes but gives you a rich polish for up to six weeks.
5. Revive color
"If you dye your hair, going slightly warmer in the winter makes your shade look richer," says colorist Rita Hazan, owner of the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City. Look for words like golden or warm on the box, or the letter G (which stands for golden) in the shade number. Then keep your hue vibrant with a sulfate-free shampoo designed for color-treated hair, such as Alterna Bamboo UV+ Color Shampoo, $20, and rinse with warm — not hot — water.
